Multilevel List

I've created a multi-level list and Heading 1/Level 1 works fine.  I am having trouble with Heading 2/Level 2.  It works fine for a while but then I reach a heading in the doc where the numbering is off.  For instance, instead of continuing numbering 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 my 4.2 is now 1.3.  When I look at the Multilevel list I created earlier, my Heading 1 is not the same heading that I originally set up. It appears that somewhere in the document I've lost my original Styles for Heading 1 and therefore, Heading 2, gets thrown off.  Is there a way to reveal codes to see where the disconnection might have occurred?

To add to what Suzanne has said, if it turns out that numbering wasn't set up correctly, click in the first Heading 1 paragraph of the document and click Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List to display the Multilevel List dialog box (ignore the fact that the "define new" part is misleading). Then, following the instructions in the article at http://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html, recreate the numbering.

Assuming that you have set up the multilevel list following the instructions at http://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html, it should suffice to click in a given paragraph and press Ctrl+Q to correct incorrect numbering.

Thank you for your response.  It did not clear up the issue that I had perhaps because the document was created by our client and had issues to begin with.  However, the steps you provided are very helpful in terms of starting a list and incorporating styles from scratch.  It will definitely come in handy.
