Word Style Changes Do Not Take Effect/Cannot Be Saved

Hi All. I'm working on a Word document, which seems to have a lot of bad styles. There were unwanted indentation in headings and body texts, wrong font in TOCs.

For the indentation, I have to manually click the style again (I don't need to make any changes to the style itself), and the unwanted indentation will disappear. But as soon as I click the Save button to save the document, the unwanted indentation comes back. I even tried to clear all styles to the heading or body text, and then reapply the styles, but it did not work.

For the TOC, changes to the font do not take effect. I modify the TOC 1 or TOC 2 style and want to change the font from Times New Roman to Arial, but after I click OK, nothing happens. If I click Modify again on that style, that style still uses Times New Roman.

Has anyone met such issues before? How to solve them?
