Non Printable Characters

I'm using Word:mac 2011.

On an .docx file I noticed a non printable character for which I have no explanation or meaning. Searching the internet, I found no hint either.

Obviously, the character stands for a Space, which normally is shown as a dot. This character is a dot with a tilde above. (Note: most space in this document are shown as dot, only few spaces have this special character.)

Appreciate if somebody has an answer.

Thanks.

What you are seeing is a non-breaking space. In Word 2011 they can be entered using Insert> Symbol> Advanced Symbol - Special Characters or by the built-in keystroke Control+Shift+Space Bar.

Among other reasons they often are use to prevent proper names from being separated when occurring at the end of a line.
