Pivot Table Column Header Formatting Lost with Refresh

I've been using pivots for many years, but only recently started using Office 2013.  The first thing I do every time I start a new pivot it is change the formatting, removing the autofit function, leaving the "preserve formatting" checked, turning off the expand/collapse buttons, turning on classic pivot table layout, then clearing the design so I can format it myself.  This has always worked for me, until now.  I followed the same steps, formatted my column headings, hit refresh, and all the formatting disappears.  I've closed and restarted Excel a couple of times without success.

Can someone please give me some troubleshooting steps on this?

Well, I've learned a little more about this situation.  For whatever reason, if I only format one cell at a time, the pivot preserves the formatting, but if I select more than one and format all selected cells at one time, it seems clear that formatting on refresh.

I've tried this multiple times, and it seems to be repeatable.  I really hope there's a fix for this.  If you tell me that, after so many years of being able to format column headings all at once, that I have to select one cell at a time and format each separately, I'm going to be really disappointed.
