Microsof Open XML Converter

I have Powerpoint 2016 installed but every time I save a created file with a specific name it is saved as an MS Open XML Converter file with a strange filename and in compatibility mode. If I try 'Open With' the only sensible option I can chose is MS Open XML Converter. Why doesn't Powerpoint 2016 appear as an option.

I have tried setting default programs for .ppt and .pptx to Ppt 2016 but it always comes back tp the Open XML Converter. Why does it do this and how can I stop it?

A quick question before we proceed.

-Are you trying to save file created in PowerPoint?

Go to FILE>Option>Save and make sure for option Save files in this format has selected as PowerPoint Presentation.

If issue still persist, repair the Office suite and see if it helps. Refer to the following article for instructions on how to repair the Office suite.

I have same problem, have tried everything to change file association but keeps coming up with same "recommended" programs as Adobe pdf and Microsoft Open XML Converter.

I installed this or something to convert old Office files years ago.

Link says if Repair does not work then need to uninstall and reinstall Office, this seems excessive! Can we not remove MS Open XML converter?
