section breaks and gutter

I have a book complete using the bookfold option in the page set up.  When I put in a section break to change the page number format from i, ii, iii, to 1, 2, 3, it changes the margins from then on and they are the opposite of what they need to be.  Is there a way to have the first five pages i, ii, iii, and then change to 1, 2, 3 for the rest of the book without messing up the margins.

Thanks.

When I did as you said, it got the page numbers correct, but changed the margins back to where I was.  I then went back to the Page Setup and changed the start at to Even Page and it corrected the margins and left the numbering correct.  So I know have it absolutely correct!!!  Thank you.

Be aware that what you see in Print Layout (or even in Print Preview) may not be what will print. When you insert an Odd Page/Even Page break, Word will insert a totally blank page as needed. As mentioned, you cannot have an odd page number on an even page (and vice versa). If you have five pages of front matter (i-v), you need to have a blank page vi, followed by 1 on a recto page.

I discourage use of the gutter because it makes no sense to me. When you are creating a book, you are (presumably) already using "Mirror margins." That being the case, you can just add to the Inside margin instead of using a gutter. But Print Layout view is deceptive because it does not show you facing pages, and it does not display the blank pages that Word inserts. If you have enabled either "Mirror margins" or Different Odd and Even headers/footers, then you can display two pages in Print Preview and see the blank pages. You can't use the Print Preview in the Backstage (Print Preview and Print); you must add Print Preview Edit Mode to the Quick Access Toolbar; that one will show you facing pages including the blank ones.

As you have found, an Even Page section can't begin with an odd page number. Click in the Even Page section. Double-click the upper part of the horizontal ruler; in the Page Setup dialog box, set "Start at" to "Odd Page" on the Layout tab.

This was helpful.  When I put in a Even Page Section break, the margins are correct, but it will not allow me to start with the number 1 in that section.  It starts with 2.  It is the 6th page of the book.  I have the first five pages number i, ii, iii, iv, v, and then have the even page section break.  I have used the page number formatting window to tell it to start at number 1, but it starts at 2.  I assume that is because of the even page section marking.  Any ideas?

What type of Section Break did you insert?  An Odd Page Section Break, or and Even Page Section Break?

While you do not see it in Print Layout, when the document is printed, Word will insert any required blank pages to respect the page start requirement of Odd\Even Page Section Breaks.
