jump to endnote hyperlink not working

I have a manuscript of about 600 pages with numerous endnotes.

It was originally created using word 97 (or something like that).

Now in word 2013, double-clicking on the endnote number in the text does not always bring me to the endnote.

The cursor just stays put on the number...

In addition, sometimes when scrolling through the endnotes in print view, it jumps automatically back to the first endnote of the book...

Is there a solution to this?

Thanks.

I didn't try it because I found that a simpler solution was just to save the file as is (don't even need to close it) and try again.

It seems to solve the problem for me.

Mine is only a topical solution that cures the symptom.

Doesn't prevent the problem from arising again.

You could try treating the document as corrupt, as Paul suggested, and see if his fix provides a permanent solution.

Your description suggests the document may have acquired some form of corruption. Corrupt documents can often be 'repaired' by inserting a new, empty, paragraph at the very end, copying everything except that new paragraph to a new document based on the same template (headers & footers may need to be copied separately), closing the old document and saving the new one over it.

Alternatively, if the endnotes have become unlinked from the content, see: http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/word_tip_pages/convert_reference_notes_to_dynamic_footnotes.html
