Blank document number keeps increasing

Question

Every time I open a new blank word document there is an increase in the title of the document that appears by default (e.g. 'document05'). As of this moment I have reached 'document47' and I cannot figure out why Microsoft doesn't reset the document number back to document01 like it used to.

Does this increase in number indicate that Word is not able to access previous blank document templates?

How do I check to ensure that the blank template can be accessed?

Word must be running somewhere if you have outlook close it. If that does not work it may be that something is preventing temp files from closing for this see: http://www.gmayor.com/what\_to\_do\_when\_word\_crashes.htm

Close all documents then close Word.

Open the Windows Task Manager  Ctrl+Alt+Delete then select "Start Task Manager"

Click the "Processes" tab and look for a process WINWORD.EXE.  If found, select and kill it by right clicking and selecting "End Process"

Reopen Word.

Close all your word documents then open a new document.

This is not something that has been happening during a single computer session. When I shut down my computer and open word again the numbering continues to increase.

There seems to be something preventing word from opening previous templates.
