Access 2007 Database File Intermittently Opens with Read Only Message

Hello all,

Can somebody please help me?

My Access 2007 database file intermittently opens read only with a message: *"This database has been opened as read-only.  You can only change data in linked tables.  To make design changes, save a copy of the database"*and when this occurs I am unable to edit it.

This problem started when I cut the database file from a OneDrive folder and pasted it into a folder on my Windows 10 desktop PC.  Before I did this there was no problem with the file.  I am the only user on the PC and have full permissions for the folder and file.

Saving a copy does not solve the problem (that this is not what the message is saying, so I did not expect it to help).  All of the other threads I have read so far involving this message have not solved the problem.  Moving the file back to the OneDrive folder does not solve it either.

Thanks in advance

    Hello again Scott,

Appreciate your trouble in helping me.

Have now compacted, compiled (removing a couple of small errors) and compacted again.  Checked that the latest Windows and Office updates are installed and they appear to be so.

    Still have the problem!!

May be grasping at straws now, but is there a way to check if any updates have been missed?  I just checked updates in settings that have been installed and the latest are very recent.

Will now go through it all again to double check and hope that that will work.

    Cheers,

    Ross

Windows and Office are set to auto update, so that should be good

I wouldn't trust auto update. Open Windows Update and make sure that all is being updated as expected. I almost always see several updates marked as "Missing" or "Error" when I review a client who has auto-update toggled.

    Thanks Scott,

In response to your welcome suggestions:

    1. File was pasted to a Documents folder subfolder

    1. I made the location Trusted as you described and still had fault
    2. Imported old db into new db and still had fault, but have not had a chance to compact and compile yet
    3. Windows and Office are set to auto update, so that should be good

Hopefully the compact and compile will help me.

    Many thanks for your assistance.

    Will report back again soon.

    Ross

Where did you drop it on Win10? In almost every case, you should put that in your Documents folder on Win10. Other locations might give you troubles, even as an Admin.

Also - is the location you're dropping it into set up as a Trusted Location? If not, you need to do so. You can do it from Access - Options - Trusted Locations.

Finally, I'd suggest you create a new, blank database and import everything from the old database to the new one. You may have some corruption of the database, or of an object in the database. After importing, be sure to do this:

    -- Compact the database

-- Compile the database - from the VBA Editor, click Debug - Compile. Fix any errors, and continue doing this until the Compile option is disabled.

    -- Compact again

Also, be sure that your Office and Windows installations are fully up to date.
