When I try to close Microsoft Word on my mac, I get an error message that says

"Microsoft Visual Basic

Run-time error '5853'

invalid parameters"

Any ideas what this is or how to fix it?  It just started a few days ago.

weird.

Thanks,

Alicia: do follow the .plist cleanup procedure. It won't hurt.

So the question here is, who is recreating linkCreation.dotm? This file is related to PDFmaker, an Adobe utility.

Make sure you move everything out of Word's Startup folder (better yet, also those for Powerpoint and Excel). Do this at the same time that you take Normal.dotm out of its native folder. And if you see next to it the above files, out with them as well.

Here's two previous threads that might be of help: one and two.

There is a solution, don't worry, we'll get there!

See if there is anything in the following folder. If there is, move its contents to the Desktop (on their way to the Trash):

    Applications > Microsoft Office 2011 > Office > Startup > Word

    If the problem persists:

    • Quit Word and go to the Finder
    • In the Finder's main menu at the top of the screen, press the Option key, click on Go and select Library
    • Once in this folder, open the Preferences folder
    • Locate file com.microsoft.Word.plistand move it to the Desktop (on its way to the Trash)
    • Open Word and test how it behaves

    Let me know what happens.

This is just a diagnostic step:

    • Quit Word
    • Press Shift
    • Start Word from the dock
    • Release Shift after Word loads
    • Quit Word

    Did you get a message?

    Hi Daniel,

To begin with, thank you very much for your prompt reply.

I followed this path and inside the word file, there was a word document, named "linkCreation.dotm". I moved it to the Desktop.

Then, I opened a word document and quit word and the annoying error message disappeared so far. I tried it twice.

Shall I delete it now from the Desktop?

    Thanks again!

    Cheers,

    Christina

If you don't use macros, then you may have caught a macro virus. Errors typically happen because they are designed for the PC, so the macros usually only execute partially and don't cause any harm beyond what you're experiencing.

Please refer to this thread, at least for the diagnostic part. Then post back!
