Help with compatibility mode?

I had some word documents on a memory stick from my laptop which I plugged into my new TV. When I plugged the memory stick back into my laptop all the files had been deleted. To recover the files I downloaded and applied the 'MiniTool power data recovery' program. This did recover my documents but all of these documents now are in 'compatibility mode' and when I open them the message 'Microsoft Office cannot verify the license for this product. You should repair the Office program by using control panel.' Could someone help me please as these documents are important. Thank you.

First, if you value your data, stop using Word on files that reside on a memory stick.

The message you are getting seem to be about your program installation rather than the files.

To get rid of the compatibility mode, try saving, on your hard drive, with a new name. They should shift to your current version of Word.

Word does not work with flash drives. Using Word with documents on flash drives is the #1 cause of document corruption. You need to act as if you do not have any flash drives while you are using Word. You can use Windows to copy any document on a flash drive to your hard drive, use Word with it, and when Word is closed, copy it back if you wish.

This means:

  • Do not open a document on a flash drive from Word or with Word.
  • Do not save a document to a flash drive from within Word.
  • Do not print a Word document while it is on a flash drive.
