Word - Section Break

Anonymous

I have a document with headers and footers and section breaks.  If the section break coincides with the physical page break the headers and footers  are missing on the next page.

  • page 1 - header / footer correct
  • body page 1
  • end of section,  AND end of physical page 1
  • page 2 -header / footer missing
  • body page 2
  • end of physical page 2
  • page 3 - header / footer correct

To test this one of the hard returns in the body of page 1 had its size reduced by one point and the header / footer for page 2 appeared.

For several hours I have been trying to access this site so I could post this link to one of the files in question,

    https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=95E9849B11BDE22F!1293&authkey=!ANZjb5L_Ozem6AU&ithint=file%2cdocx

It should be Word 2010, and the error happens going from page 49 to 50.

It sounds like the Different First Page Header\Footer option might be selected in the Second Section and there has been no content added to that Header.  If you do not need a different header\footer on the first page of that Section, uncheck the Different First Page box in the Header & Footer Tools>Design tab of the ribbons.

You should not use empty paragraphs for spacing. (I recognize you may have a table on page 1 and have to have an empty paragraph.

An empty paragraph after a table is required only at the end of a document; it is not required at the end of a section.

The section breaks are because this document is put together from several documents.  These are actually Titles of law books, with each title containing several hundred sections.  The empty lines come from the myriad of ways that a section may end, but doesn't really matter.

It was just a convenient way to test a hypothesis, did the missing headers / footers occur because the section and page broke at the same spot.

Why do you have these section breaks. Are you changing page orientation?

The section break may actually be at the beginning of page 2 rather than end of page 1. In that case you would get continuation or even-page headers/footers from Section 1.

You should not use empty paragraphs for spacing. (I recognize you may have a table on page 1 and have to have an empty paragraph.
