Incomplete Excel File

At the Apple store, I purchased Office Home and Student 2016. I went to the Apple store to load it (some weeks later) and asked, before doing so, if all my data would make it. I was told, sensibly enough, that yes of course it would make it; why would a developer put out a product that risks losing data? So I just tried to open an old document or spreadsheet in Excel on the new Excel from Office, recently purchased (at the Apple store). Some very key data is not there.

I did not do an update - should I? Is there a chance, any chance, that by doing an update from 2012 (purchased Office for Mac the first time i 2008) I could get that data back?

No. I have clicked on the rows, they are just not there.

Now I have to go back and figure out how to retrieve the option to do that update from 2012 - any pointers are appreciated.

    Thank you.

Did you get any errors upon opening the file? Are any worksheets or rows hidden?

What I mean by not there, is that 1) there are some worksheets missing. 2) there were over 200 rows of data previously, now there are 35.

    Thank you.

Yes, you should always do an update to make sure your software is current.

There should be no loss of data. Excel 2008 data can be read with no changes by Excel 2016. What do you mean by "not there"? Did you gent any errors when opening the file? If you click on a cell, can you see the data or formula in the formula bar? Is it this one workbook or others also?
