Format changes when I save, close and reopen

I have a document on which I have used styles. I set the format of my footnotes to 11 point and updated the style accordingly. I saved, did some work, saved again and closed. When I came back to the document the footnotes are in 14point. This has happened repeatedly. It also happens on another style - in that case the style it is based on and the following style both change.

My document is 275 pages long and will get a little longer. I will be converting to an ebook and would like my formats to be correct.

How do I stop the formats changing?

Is it possible that the styles are being updated from the template? Go to Developer | Templates | Document Template and make sure that the check box for "Automatically update document styles" is not checked.

When that box is checked, every time you open the document, the style definitions will be reset to the formatting specified in the attached template. Although 14-point type for the Footnote Text style would be unusual, it could be what the template calls for. For more on this, see http://shaunakelly.com/word/templaterelations/index.html

I haven't had chance to check - it is an intermittent problem. But that box was checked and you are an expert, so thank you.
