Double Page Numbers

I am writing a document that has numerous sections.  Some of the sections are multiple pages long, some are one page.  In the header of each page I am wanting "Page 1 of 4" where the page numbers listed are actually referring to the section.   In the footer I want "Page 1" which is referring to the page of the overall document.

I have unlinked the headers for each individual section.  I designate the page number start with 1 for each section and set the second number to section pages.  This works very nicely.  Until.....

In the footer, I have Page 1.  The footers of each section are still linked.  On the first page I have it set to start as 1 and then the next page set it to same as previous section.  This seems to work well, as page two now says page 2.  However, if you look back to the header of the second page, which also happens to be the start of the second section, that has been reformatted to be the same as the previous section, and now shows "2 of 1"

It seems that there is no way to have the starting page indicators be independent of each other.  One is in the header, and the other in the footer, but they seem linked as if they are the same variable because they are on the same page.

Is there a way around this?  My desire is to have the header be able to show page 2 of 4, because it is page 2 of the 4 pages of that section, but have the footer say page 57, because it is the 57th page of the document.

Can this be done?

To do that, in the footer, use the regular page numbering with it set to Continuer from the previous section.  Then select each of the Section Breaks in turn, and add a bookmark S1 for Section 1, S2 for Section 2, etc. and then in the header:

  1. In the first section use just a { Page } field
  2. In the second section, insert the formula { = { Page } - { PageRef S1 } }
  3. In the third section, insert the formula { = { Page } - { PageRef S2 } }
  4. etc. for each section of the document

You must use CTRL+F9 to insert each pair of the field delimiters and use ALT+F9 to toggle off their display
