PowerPoint 2016 shut off notes

In PowerPoint 2016 for Mac, the notes are ginormous.  Since I rarely use them, is there a default setting to have them not show when opening up a new PowerPoint document?  Every time I create a new document, I have to turn them off and it is getting aggravating.

Thanks!

Here's a screen shot of what the Notes pane should look like:

Unfortunately, this version stores far fewer preferences than 2011, so while adjusting the Notes pane size for a presentation will get remembered when that file is reopened, there's no way that I can find to set anything different for a default. It's likely you would have to completely uninstall and reinstall to fix this glitch.

For a workaround, you can open PowerPoint>Preferences>View and change the default to Slide View, which doesn't display either the Note or Slides panes.

As a second workaround, if you click on Notes in the status bar, it will toggle the pane between hidden and displayed.
