Words stuck together

I had some old Word documents from 1995 on disk.  I was able to get them onto my computer, but there are a lot of weird errors.  Most of them aren't too hard to fix, but the most time consuming are where two words are stuck together.  I am using Word 2008.  Is there any easy way to "unstick" the words.  I have been doing this one at a time, and it's taking forever.

Select a passage & change the font to something contemporary, such as Cambria... Does that have any impact?

My guess is that files as old as what you claim most likely were created using either fixed-width or Postscript fonts, neither of which display well in the more current software.

Without the nonprinting characters being displayed I can't even hazard a guess regarding the "random returns", though :-)

Can you post a screen clip of what you are seeing?

Thanks to both of you.  When I went back to look at the original files, in all of the lines, I noticed that it said Word Perfect.  I had forgotten that they were in Word Perfect.  We had a really old computer, that had Word 98 and something called Mac Link Plus.  Using that, I was able to open the Word Perfect files just fine.  I then saved them as Word files.  Then on my newer computer, I opened them, and saved them with the newer version of Word.
