How do I take the drop-down list I created and make it a checkbox list that would be displayed in each cell of a column (in a spreadsheet of multiple rows)? I'd like to be able to check/uncheck boxes uniquely by cell. I also only want to display the boxes that are checked (boxes that were not checked or became unchecked would not be displayed). Essentially, although the actual checkbox list would be the same for each row, I would be able to select different checkboxes for each row.
Then I'd like to go to the top of the column and use the same check box list as a filter, selecting the items that I'd like see. The rows with the selected item(s) checked would then be displayed. The rows that did not have those items checked would not be displayed.
For example, say I had a spreadsheet of 500 rows of data and for each row there was a column indicating engineering function (i.e. Electrical, Mechanical, Software). I'd like to select for each row the appropriate engineering function or functions (could be one, two, or all three). If just Electrical was checked for a particular row, then just Electrical would show. If Electrical and Mechanical were selected, then both Electrical and Mechanical would show (in a list format). If I unchecked an engineering function for a particular row for whatever reason, then that function would no longer show in the cell.
Then what I want to do is to go to the header of that column and find the same/similar check box list. I would then like to select the engineering functions I'm interested in filtering on. The rows that did not have those functions checked would not show (be filtered out).
Admittedly, I'm the most basic Visual Basic user and I've been researching this for hours. I see things similar, but not similar enough that I can make the translation. Seems I should be able to do this but I've not been able to find how. I am using Excel 2007. Can anyone help me?
