I have a freshly restored laptop with Windows 10.  I installed Office 2016 Professional (64-bit).  I can start up any office application and it pops up the window stating "First things first" where I am to set up the choose the update method.  I can choose Install updates or Ask Me Later.  No matter which I choose, the moment I click the Accept button, the Office applicaiton immediately crashes.  I get the message that states Microsoft Word (or whatever application) has stopped working.  There is just a Close Program button.

It doesnt matter which Office application it is.  They all are crashing at this point.

    Hello,

    Thank you for your reply.

Let us try starting the computer in clean boot mode and then try to open Office application and verify the status.

Starting the computer in clean boot mode would disable all the non-Microsoft applications and the antivirus which could be one of the reasons for the error.

Refer the article below to start the computer in clean boot.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Disclaimer: Ensure to restart the computer in normal mode after completing the troubleshooting steps.

I hope the above information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance.

    Thank you.

After following the above instructions, I confirmed I was in "clean boot mode".  I then tried starting Excel, and Word.  Bot applications reached the point where it asked how I wanted to install updated (labeled with the First Things first" title).  I selected the top choice and clicked Accept.

Both applications crashed like described in my initial post.

It would appear that clean boot mode did not help.

I updated everything, it had no effect.

I am able to open all applications in Safe mode.  There are no active add-ins installed.

Repairing the installation had no effect.
