When do I press "Complete this migration batch"?

I am in Hybrid mode with on-prem Exchange 2010 SP3.

I would like to slowly transition end users in groups and I am now confused on the correct procedure.

I clicked "Complete this migration batch" for two test users (Completed status and a Remote User Mailbox was created) now no one can email them.

Another test user just in "Synced" mode appears to be emailing as desired but now access to mail.office365.com is not granted (O365 mailbox does not look created).

Am I suppose to leave all migrations in "Synced" mode until I am ready to change MX record to popint to O365?

Thank You, Joe

Hi Joe,

Your understanding is correct. When you click the “Completed”, on-premise mailboxes will be moved to cloud. If you don’t click the “Completed” and it shows “Synced”, the mailboxes are still on your on-premise servers. Only the data is copied to cloud. If your MX records are pointed to on-premise servers and you don’t click the “Completed”, your users can still use the on-premise mailboxes. However, if you click the “Completed”, the process of the migration will be finished. Users can only use the cloud mailboxes (Given your situation, it will not work due to MX records).

If you don’t change MX records now, you can keep the status “Synced”.

Best Regards,

Erick

    Erick,

Each test user was migrated by themselves and it has a "Completed" status. I deleted the one to see if that did anything. I still have one test user as "Completed"

It appears when I click on "Complete this migration batch”, it breaks the user's email as I read that the Completion may change the user's email server. In my testing it appears, I should leave the users as "Synced" until I am ready to change MX records but I am scared if I plan the roll out this way and if I change the MX record and it doesn't work.

    Hi Joe,

May I confirm whether two test users are in one batch and one test user shows in “Synced” mode after you click the "Complete this migration batch”?

Generally, when the migration batch is completed, it will ask you to click "Complete this migration batch”. At that time, you can click the button. Meantime, you can also check the “Automatically complete the migration batch” box to finish the batch. If you didn’t check it, you need to complete it manually.

    Best Regards,

    Erick
