Text not showing in Print Layout

Hello,

I have a large document (about 30000 words and 120 pages) with a lot of complementary images inserted.

The problem is that at certain parts some portion of my text does not appear in the Print Layout view although it is shown in the Draft view.

Can anyone please explain why is this happening?

The document is fully formatted with custom margins (21*21cm), Multilevel List and my basic text (e.g. normal) has special paragraph setting so that about half the page to remain empty for potential placement of images.

Someone suggested that this may be caused by some images. I mostly used JPG, PNG and a few BMP but it doesn't seem to be the case.

I attached a print screen with my text in Print Layout and Draft view to highlight the missing text, and a second one to demonstrate the only way i can resolve this problem (in an ineffective way).

Any response will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

    Hello Konstantinos,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

To resolve the issue let us follow these steps:

You may check if the issue resolves while viewing the document in the Word Safe Mode.

To open Word 2013 in the Safe Mode please follow the steps as shown on the following Microsoft Resource article.

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspx

Note - The above article lists steps for all Microsoft Office 2013 applications, however, follow the steps to open Word 2013 in the Safe Mode.

The above step opens Word in the Safe Mode. Check if you are able to view all text in the document normally in Word Print Layout view. If yes, then you may follow the next set of steps in the above mentioned article to troubleshoot Add-Ins in Word.

Try the above steps and let us know the result.

    Hope the above information helps.

    Thank you.

Hello Mohan and thank you for your respone.

I did what you suggested but the problem keeps persisting.

It seems that the add-ons are not the case.

Anyway, because I had to hand it over I exported the file as pdf and fixed the layout issues with Adobe Acrobat (proper hanging etc.).

    Cheers.

That is indeed very puzzling, and I have no explanation for it, but I can point out one thing I see in the screen shots that you may want to fix. I would guess that you are using Normal style for your text and have added a first-line indent to that style. This has had the result that your Footnote Separator is also indented. This is one reason why it's generally preferable to use Body Text (or in this case Body Text First Indent) for the base body style and leave Normal alone, but you can correct this. When you're in Draft view, on the References tab, in the Footnotes group, click Show Notes. This will open a Footnotes pane with a dropdown list box. In that box, choose Footnote Separator and modify its paragraph to remove the first-line indent.

Hello Suzanne and thank you for your remark.

The footnote separator was something that bothered me, but I couldn't figure out what it was (since my priority was to fix the above mentioned problem), but now it's fixed thanks to you.

Although Word seems to be a simple program there are so yet so many things to be learned, and the proper use of Styles is one of them. If I had use a different Style (custom created) for my Body Text probably nothing of these would have happened. I also noticed that the problem with the missing text happens only when there is a footnote text underneath, so they have to be somehow related.

    Cheers

If you want to send me a copy of the document, referencing this thread in the covering email message, I will investigate the problem.
