Checking for Errors in Using Endnotes and Cross-references AND Quickest Way to Format Endnotes So It is Similar to Autonumbering Format Style

How do I check for errors in the utilization of endnotes and cross-references? These are things that I am worried about:

  1. using manual superscripted numbers instead of putting in endnotes and cross-references (so that at the next update, the error might not be caught). Is there a way to catch this efficiently? The document is being touched by numerous individuals, and not all are adept at using endnotes at this time so I'm worried that some might make this error.
  2. how does the "error not defined" show up? Where does it show up? In what instances does it show up? Should we just trust that if we update fields and no "error not defined" shows up, that it is all good and we don't have to check for anything else?

I'm also looking for the quickest way to format endnotes so that instead of superscript, it is not superscripted. Is there a way to do this automatically? We utilize endnotes for our reference list and we have a certain way we wanted it formatted (format we want is similar to autonumbering format). Is there a way to do this?

Thank you so much for all your help!!!!

This should have worked. Have you tried manually updating the cross-references (F9)? If that doesn't help, you'll need to reinsert them.

    I have a follow-up question on errors.

So, I moved an endnote from one paragraph to another, and now the cross-references are giving me the error of "Error-Bookmark not defined". Why does this occur? How can I prevent this from happening? All I would like is to move my endnote so that it is in the next paragraph. Is there a way to do this correctly without creating the error with the cross-references with it? (I used CTRL + X and CTRL + V to move the endnote).

Thank you very much, but this is kind of urgent so any suggestions will help!

    1. To search for superscripted numbers that are not endnote references, you can use the Find dialog to look for superscript generally (in the empty "Find what" box, press Ctrl+Shift+=). If you have other superscripted text, you can limit the search to numerals by enabling wildcards and searching for [0-9] with superscript formatting. This will find all superscript formatting, including genuine endnote references (you can search for just endnote references by searching for ^e), but if you encounter the same number twice, then you will know that one of them (probably the first) is not a genuine endnote reference. If you select "Find in" in the Find dialog, you can quickly scan the document to check all the highlighted (selected) instances.
    2. There isn't an "error not defined." There's an "Error: Bookmark not defined" that you might get if the target of a cross-reference has been deleted. Not seeing it is not a guarantee of freedom from problems, but it's a good sign.
