Why is it so difficult for Microsoft to create software with common sense in mind?

Where do I begin...?  Well, regarding Word for Mac, why does Preferences not include a setting to tell it that when I double click on a Word file in Finder (the Mac file browser), I really do want to open that file, no other files, period.  I don't want the last 4 Word files I worked on to open up on top of the file I want to see and edit.  Why is that so hard to imagine?  Why is this not common sense?  Believe me, I would not use Word at all were it not used by everyone else on the planet and thus is more or less required (which really baffles me, but that's a story for another day).

When I want to open a Word file by double clicking on the Word file, I want to open JUST THAT FILE.  For God's sake, why do I need to then close the 4 other files that Word has opened ON TOP OF the file I want before I can work on that file?  Please, someone, tell me the thought process you guys went through to decide this behavior.

Please consider, um, TESTING WHAT YOU BUILD WITH ACTUAL REAL COMPUTING PROFESSIONALS.  You might just learn something.

Office 2008 was released many years before the newer versions of the Apple operating system. There is no way they could have foreseen these changes so long ago.

I have already considered this situation.  However, the fact remains that the software is flawed if it requires an operating system setting to change the functioning of an application.  I do not accept the "solution" you propose, as it is not specific to the Word application.

If you want to count bugs, I would be happy to compare Microsoft software with Apple software at any time.  Please do not blame Apple for Microsoft's discrepancies.

This isn't a Word bug, it's an Apple OS X "feature". Please open System Preferences. If you're running Yosemite or later, open General and check Close windows when quitting an app. In earlier versions, uncheck Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps.

The all-caps isn't really necessary, we already understand your frustration with Apple's continual changes.
