Pen eraser

I get completely inconsistent results with the pen and buttons in various MS applications and apps.

Surface 3, Windows 81, everything up to date, standard pen and drivers.

In Word 2013:

  • the pen writes
  • pressing the eraser button gives an eraser icon when hovering and using the pen erases
  • but pressing the selection button changes to a big circle icon but draws a line as if no button is pressed

In OneNote 2013:

  • the pen writes
  • but pressing the eraser button doesn't change the icon when hovering and using the pen writes as if no button is pressed
  • but pressing the selection button changes to a big circle icon but draws a line as if no button is pressed

In OneNote the app:

  • the pen has a little dot cursor and writes
  • pressing the eraser button gives an eraser icon when hovering and using the pen erases
  • pressing the selection button changes to a big circle icon and selects

Any thoughts?

If this is really a Surface question, I've tried there and they just delete questions, so I'll try Office support instead.

I only tried Word as a test, so it still doesn't work properly, but it doesn't concern me.

. The first "Use the pen button as a right click equivalent" turns on selection in OneNote 2013 (but not Word which remain broken).

Does this mean that you are still facing issues using pen eraser within Word?

Someone reported a solution to this a year or so back for a previous version of Surface Pro.

Go to Control Panel and select Pen and Touch. On the Pen Options tab, select both of the checkboxes for Pen Buttons. The first "Use the pen button as a right click equivalent" turns on selection in OneNote 2013 (but not Word which remain broken). The second "Use the top of the pen to erase ink" enables the side button for erasing in both Word 2013 and OneNote 2013.
