As Stefan explains, pressing Tab when text is selected will replace the selected text with a tab character. If you were expecting the text to be indented, then you need to go to File | Options | Proofing | AutoCorrect Options | AutoFormat As You Type and check the box for "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces."

Pressing Tab after you have selected text would be the same as replacing the text with a tab character (unless you have cleared the option at File | Options | Advanced to replace text as you type).

On the other hand, if you are saying that tabbing (without selecting first) doesn't work as expected, you have to look at the settings for tab stops. In some versions of Word, it is possible for text to go to a tab stop set outside of the margin. In some cases, that would cause the text to disappear (for example in a table cell or text box).

Actually, no. If the option is enabled, you can select a paragraph and press Tab, and it will be indented. This is what the OP was expecting, I think.

In addition, for the Tab key to create indents, you have to place the insertion point at the beginning of the text line.

If yes, then it is by design when you select text and press Tab key text gets deleted.
