Unable to deactivate DirSync

G'day!

I'm encountering an issue where I'm unable to deactivate DirSync. I'm needing to turn it off so I can perform a cut-over migration for exchange, after which I'll be planning to switch it back on again.

I'm attempting to switch it off through Powershell, using the command:

Set-MsolDirSyncEnabled -EnableDirSync $false

However, this is just giving me the following error message:

Set-MsolDirSyncEnabled : You cannot turn off Active Directory synchronization.

At line:1 char:1

  • Set-MsolDirSyncEnabled -EnableDirSync $false
  •

  • CategoryInfo : OperationStopped: (:) [Set-MsolDirSyncEnabled],

MicrosoftOnlineException

  • FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.Online.Administration.Automation.DirSy

ncStatusChangeNotAllowedException,Microsoft.Online.Administration.Automati

on.SetDirSyncEnabled

I have used this command successfully in the past, so not sure what is wrong here.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

-Matt

Looks like I can mark this one off, the command worked now. Still not sure what the issue was, but appears to be ok now.

Thanks!

for the record yes I tried the though the web UI and used this command

    "Set-MsolDirSyncEnabled -EnableDirSync $false"

After 8 hours, it seems the problem went away like the original poster. It seems the solution is just to wait.

GUI does then not work either. The deactivate button jumps back to Active after refreshing page.

Being patient seems to be the best/only solution. After trying for around 2h 15m, it finally started deactivating...
