How to insert image as a field variable using mail merge?

I am using Microsoft Word for Mac, version 15.19.1 which does not say "2016" or whatever anywhere (except 'copyright 2016'), and it just does not want to accept any of the frequently mentioned { INCLUDEPICTURE "{MERGEFIELD " etc., etc.   commands.

I've tried using "\"  and then ""  and then the {MERGEFIELD path} followed by / followed by {MERGEFIELD ImageName}" etc., etc. and all variations thereto.

I 've tried the path as Macintosh HD\Users\etc..and

simply Users\etc., etc.   Neither works.

Isn't there any method that does work?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and time...

I just tested, and yes it does work.

You have to insert the field name you are using for the picture URL into the INCLUDEPICTURE Word field. Here's how the INCLUDEPICTURE field should look where URL is the field name of the Excel column having my URLS

The original q was about mail merging, not a simple Word doc:

How to insert image as a field variable using mail merge?

To try to have a logo on each name badge, I'm using the Mailings wizard in Word (Mac, 2016 version) and a simple Excel file for my source. This answer doesn't work (yes, I remembered to add a space after INCLUDEPICTURE and enclose the URL in double-quote marks).

Then I tried simply putting the URL into its own column in the Excel source file that the Mailings wizard could pick up as a field.

    Any other possible solutions?

    INCLUDE PICTURE works fine.

Your picture has to be located on a web server that anyone can get at using a regular web URL in http:// format.

In Word, use Insert > Field.

In the Links and References group choose IncludePicture

    Click the Option button

After the word INCLUDEPICTURE put a space and then put the URL in quotation marks.

Click the OK button to close Field Options

Click the OK button to close Field dialog

Your picture will now appear in the Word document.

If you press Option+F9 the field code will look like this (having your own URL):
