How to uncheck 'Hide Spelling Errors' in Word Mac?

Today I removed a word from my custom dictionary file for US English. Afterward I noticed that I could not uncheck 'Hide Spelling Errors.' This persists across all documents and even after disabling the option under the Review/Languages dialog. Appreciate any help! I would prefer not to have to reinstall, however, since this is complicated while I'm away from my university's local network.

When that menu command is dimmed it **** that the automatic spelling checker is disabled. It has no correlation to the Do not check... checkbox in the Language dialog.

Go into Word> Preferences> Spelling & Grammar, restore the check on Check spelling as you type.
