Numbering Value Inconsistent

Hi,

I have written a document with headings (from Heading 1 to Heading 4).

Most of the time I get what I am after i.e.

  1. Heading 1

4.1 Heading 2

4.1.1 Heading 3

4.1.1.1 Heading 4

But for some reason, in two of the chapters the headings for level three display out of order e.g.

  1. Heading 1

4.1 Heading 2

1.4.1 Heading 3

4.1.1.1 Heading 4

The level 4 heading is still in order, it is just the level 3 heading in two chapters which have the first and second number swapped around.

When I right click on the numbers and select 'Set Numbering Value...' it comes up with a box and I set the value to 4.1.1, but the preview below still says 1.4.1

What am I doing wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If this is a single document and you have set up multilevel numbering correctly, clicking in each of the problem paragraphs and pressing Ctrl+Q (ResetPara) should suffice. However, it's safer to check that you actually have set up numbering correctly first. Click in the first Heading 1 paragraph of the document and then click Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List. The dialog box displays the list defined at the insertion point. Verify that numbering is correct for each level and that the appropriate style has been associated with each level. See http://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks very much for your help, I must have set it up wrong to start with and creating a new list style sorted it all out.

    Cheers,

    Hayden

Are your chapters separate documents? If so, the numbering for level 3 is set up incorrectly in Chapter 4. Temporarily set the start number for each level to the level number (1 for Level 1, 2 for Level 2, and so on). This will undoubtedly cause the preview to show 2.1.3. Instead of trying to swap the fields, it's easiest to start from scratch:

    1. With Level 3 selected, clear the "Number format" box entirely.
    2. With the insertion point in the "Number format" box, click the dropdown by "Previous level number" and select "Level 1." This will insert a 1 field in the box. Follow it with a period.
    3. Click again and select "Level 2." This will insert a 2. Follow it with a period.
    4. Change the "Number style" from "(none)" to 1, 2, 3. This will insert a 3.
    5. Now set the starting numbers back to 1 (or 4 for Level 1).
