Missing Properties in Documents Based on a Custom Template

Hello. I created a template in Word 2010 and to which I added custom document properties. It was saved as a .dotx file. However, for all new documents based on this template there is neither any properties information nor any access to the properties dialog box. Below are side-by-side comparisons. Can anyone help explain why they are not available and how I can fix this? Thanks!

No, unfortunately. It has been saved as a .docx. It doesn't seem that there are settings anywhere that determine the availability of the properties. As a work-around, I created a new template, verified the access to the properties, copied across the content from the old one, saved it, and then tested it by creating a new document. That worked, but I'm still at a loss.

Does the right screen shot perhaps show an unsaved file?
