insufficient memory when opening embedded Excel charts in Powerpoint mac 2011

I get the message "there isn't enough memory available to read worksheet Try closing windows, exiting other programs or deleting unnecessary files on your hard disk" when I am attempting to open excel worksheets in a powerpoint presentation. I am unable to edit any of the embedded excel worksheets in the presentation.

It is the only window open. There is plenty of disk space available 377 GB available. I am running Office for mac 2011 14.5.5 update, on a MacBook Air with 8GB of memory.

Any ideas of what to check or change??

Thanks for any assistance!!!
