I have a hyperlink from power point presentation to a word document.

How do I return from the word document to the same slide in my presentation.

I tried to insert a hyperlink in word document, but it took me to the beginning of the presentation not the slide where I left off.

When you navigate web pages in a browser, all web pages are viewed within the same program, so it can capture the page you came from and return you to it. Hyperlinks between PowerPoint and Word are jumping between 2 different programs. They have no way to track what page or slide you came from, they only know what file is open in the other program.

The only workaround I can think of is to create a set of hyperlinks in your Word document that refer to each slide in your presentation that is hyperlinked to Word. Then, during a presentation, you'll have to choose the correct hyperlink to get back to where you were.
