Parent Child Headers

I have a word report taken from a previous document (did a file save as), I open the header delete what is in there and put in a new one that I have created.  I close the header, finish the report and do a spell check and at the end of the check it says "do you wish to continue checking document" I said yes and it brought up a box at the bottom of the page saying "Heading 2" and shows the header from the original report that I used when I did "file save as".

I deleted this header, saved the report and did a new spell check and this time it came up with another header (different to the one I had just deleted) which I deleted.  I saved the report and did another spell check and all was fine.

Am I right in calling these Parent / Child headers ? How do I stop it happening? Any simple information on them and how they work would be welcome.

To add to what Doug has said, if there has ever been text in the alternative headers, it will remain there even when the header is not in use. You may need to enable both Different First Page and Different Odd and Even in order to see them. Note that the "primary header" (the one used if you don't have either of the above options enabled) becomes the Odd Page Header when you enable Different Odd and Even, so there are really only three headers to deal with. If you have more than one section, you may well have three different headers in each. And, if a section contains fewer than three pages, you will need to temporarily add pages in order to display all the headers.

If by Header, you mean Header as in Header and Footer, it is probable that there are multiple Headers in the document.

The Headers can be different in each Section of the document and within a single section, you can have

First Page Header

Primary Header

Even Page Header

Odd Page Header

You probably only deleted one of them.

If the above is the situation that you have, referring to them as Parent/Child headers is not correct.

    Hi Doug,

Thank you for such a quick reply.

Yes, I was meaning Headers and Footers.

As I did a File, Save As there was existing text in the header e.g. name of client, report title, date I deleted this text and input my own which is why when I did the spell check I was not expecting to see anything other than the text I had typed.  I do not understand why the box appeared showing the text that referred to the previous report as I had deleted it.  There are no section breaks, this is a straightforward page 1 through to 10 word document.  It was as if the old text was lying invisibly under the new text I had typed?

Re Parent / Child headers, can you recommend some information reading on what they are and how they work?

    Kind regards

    SS
