The numbers in my list correspond to numbers in a book and I am not referring to them in order. But Microsoft Word keeps re-ordering the numbers in my list.  I have clicked on the auto numbering icon and clicked NONE for style of numbering. I have clicked on the helpful (NOT) little icon that appears sometimes on my page. Nothing helps.
