Why does Microsoft keep changing the UI (user interface)

On new software releases Microsoft frequently changes the UI (user interface) for example changing from the TOOLBAR to the RIBBON. I assume one defense is the new UI is better but not for an experienced user of the old UI. Since the mid 1960's IBM has maintained backward compatibility with forward functionality. Why can't Microsoft do the same?

Is there a way to invoke the TOOLBAR of older MICROSOFT Office versions as opposed to the daunting RIBBON. I do recognize the advantage of the RIBBON but sometimes you just want to get the job done and not spend time wrestling with the new UI.

    Hello Ben,

The newness of the UI isn't as much of a problem for people with good sight. I have dry macular degeneration and use the magnifier to find things. When the controls are small or they are the wrong color, I can't see them. So in some cases my son has helped me find some of them. He does it using an internet communication software program. However , many commands are still difficult to find. I use the high contrast screen settings, but even they don't work when the letters are purple because they are not bright enough and don't stand out to someone with macular degeneration.

Changing the U I is like shuffling the furniture to a blind person who knew where the furniture was but doesn't anymore. Then I have to call my son and try to find them again.

There is also a  problem with popups in outlook when I'm trying to read the names of the senders. I would rather hit the "right"  mouse key to get the info to appear. Automaticity in some popup dialog boxes is not helpful.

I need simple functions to use the email program.

Would Outlook in the Word program package be able to receive the email I get now through MSN?

    Thanks for listening,

Is there another forum to find this information with relatively few keystrokes

That's important feedback, thanks. I'll be sure to pass that along.

Have you tried using any of the screen-reader software or even the Windows Narrator to perhaps help you with the interface?

To be fair the Ribbon was introduced 10 years ago and it hasn't changed that much since. :)

There are ways you can customize the Ribbon and you can also add frequently-used items to the Quick Access Toolbar. Plus most of the keyboard shortcuts you used in Word 2003 do still work in Word 2013.

Are there any particular functions you're struggling to find in Word 2013?
