    Hi John,

You may be getting this error because OneNote does not recognize the credentials for your account. To understand this better and resolve the problem, please answer the following questions:

    • Did you change your password for your Microsoft account?
    • Are you able to open other Office programs without any issues?

If you changed your password, you may need to replace the stored credentials in Credential Manager to fix the problem. Here's how you can do it:

    1. Open Control Panel.
    2. Change the view to Small icons.
    3. Select User Accounts.
    4. On the left side, click on Manage your credentials.
    5. Select Windows Credentials.
    6. Look for your Microsoft account under Generic Credentials.
    7. Click Editthen replace the password.
    8. Hit Save.

Let us know if the steps above help you resolve the error when opening OneNote.

Come back if you need more help.

    Hi John,

Thank you for posting back and answering our questions. Problems with Office crashing or hanging can be caused by several things. To help you methodically identify and resolve known causes of instability in Office programs, a diagnostic tool that is known as the Office Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT) was developed. OffCAT provides a detailed report and highlights known problems that are found when it scans your computer. This report includes many parameters about your Office program configuration.

Please post back with the status of the issue. We will be glad to assist you further.
