just purchased and downloaded Office 365 Personal....My previous version was Office 2010 which is still loaded in my laptop.

My problem is that I can only open previous version documents as read only.  have tried saving the file to another area and then renaming it but that doesn't seem to work.

I can save the file and leave it as a XI000000#.xlsx and it will open as a workable file.

So what am I doing work that I can not rename a file to any other than XI000000#.xlsx format

Original Title: office 365 personal

Hi Leonard,

A quick question before we proceed.

Is the issue specific to previous version of Excel file?

Let’s change the file association for Excel application and see how it works.

Try the steps below to change the file association and check.

  1. Right click on any of the Excel file which has problem.
  2. Select ‘Open With’ from the pop-up menu.
  3. Click Choose default Program.
  4. Select Microsoft Excel in the Programs box.
  5. Check ‘Always use the selected program to open this kind of file’.

6. Click ok and try to open the file.

If the issue still persist you may Repair Office 365 Installation and check if it helps.

You may refer to below link to Repair Office 365 installation.
