I'm editing a manuscript that has hundreds of endnotes but when I try to move text--by cutting from the old and pasting in the new location--the endnote citation is lost. The help desk said it doesn't retain the endnote "by design," but I find that hard to believe (why would you NOT be able to retain the endnote citation?). Is there some other command I should be using to move text that will allow me to retain the endnotes?
I have precisely this problem and I agree with David, it is intolerably dumb of Microsoft not to have fixed it. I had a workaround. Copied (a cut and paste) app used to capture text and import to a new Word file, endnotes and all. But now even this no longer works. Would love to hear from anyone who has found another solve.

Stefan, thanks for your prompt reply. I am using Word for Mac. Commands C and P have never worked here. My workaround, as mentioned, was until recently Copied, where for some reason they do, if and only if you copy from Copied clippings board. Now all endnotes come through. Thanks again. Best, Grant
Are you using the commands related to citations in the Citations & Bibliography group on the References tab?
I can't see any problems with the endnote function itself in Word (with the limitation that you can't insert, or paste, endnotes into text boxes or headers/footers, of course).
