Excel 2016 Shared File crashes

We have a shared Excel file that was created in Excel 2013.  We upgraded to 2016 version.  Now everytime a coworker saves something in the document, and then I save something, it crashes.  All of my excel files close and then reopen.  It only happens when I save after my coworker saved something.  It only happens to me.. And I lose the scrolling function in this file.  Only in this shared file.  Does anyone else have this problem?  Luckily it saves my work, but it's getting annoying.

Hi Odile,

Thanks for getting back to us.

When the cells are copied from another workbook to the shared workbook, the styles are copied as well. These styles then continue to make the file grow. If that's the case, please try to remove these types.

To check if this is related to the settings of your Excel, please follow the steps below to start Excel in safe mode to see if there are any improvements.

  1. Find the shortcut icon for Excel 2016.
  2. Press and hold the CTRL key and double-click the application shortcut.
  3. Click Yes when a window appears asking if you want to start Excel in Safe Mode.
  4. Open the shared workbook, make some changes and save it again.

Meanwhile, if this is only happening to this shared workbook, I suggest you create a copy of the file with the same content as the original. Replace the shared workbook with the duplicate and try saving changes again.

Regards,

William

    Hi William,

Thank you for the quick reply.

    1.  I don't know the answer to this.  What do you mean by unused styles?
    2.  It is stored on our company server, in my office.  My colleague is in another state.
    3.

My colleague has the same settings.

    Thank you for your help!

    Best,

    Odile

    Hi OAmb,

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Based on your description, the shared workbook was created in Excel 2013. You are using Excel 2016 and when you try saving changes for the documents after your colleague did that, your Excel 2016 crashes and reopen itself but the changes you made before are saved.

So, given this situation, I’d like to confirm the following information with you.

    1. Does this shared workbook contain unused styles?
    2. Where is the shared workbook stored?
    3. Please capture a screenshot about the Share Workbook setting from Review > Share Workbook > Advanced.

    Regards,

    William
