Links to images in Word documents: Behavior of copy and paste seems inconsistent

Dear community,

I noticed that using copy & paste from Outlook to Word creates a link to a file in the document:

Linked images in Word document can get broken (Ref.: answers.microsoft.com thread).

However: Using copy & paste from e.g. Internet Explorer or Snipping Tool does not produce a linked item in the Word document. Can anyone explain how Word decides wether creating a link in the document or simply emedding the image?

    Dear Prabhavathi Patil,

    thanks for your reply.

    1. The file is located in "C:\XTemp"

    2a. How to _embed_ an image from Outlook into a Word document:

    • Create a new mail item in Outlook ("Home" --> "New Email")
    • Insert a picture ("Insert" --> "Pictures")
    • Save the Email as draft
    • Re-open the Email from the draft folder
    • Select the image in the body of the Email and copy it to the clipboard
    • Create a blank Word document
    • Paste the image from the clipboard

    = Result shoud be an embedded image

    2b. How to _link_ an image from Outlook into a Word document

    • Create a new mail item in Outlook ("Home" --> "New Email")
    • Insert a picture ("Insert" --> "Pictures")
    • Send the Email to any recipient
    • Open the Email from your sent items folder
    • Select the image in the body of the Email and copy it to the clipboard
    • Create a blank Word document
    • Paste the image from the clipboard

    = Result shoud be a linked image

    I hope that you can reproduce this issue.

    So I would like to understand why Copy & Paste with images from Outlook to Word results in an embedded image as long as the Email is not sent whereas the image is linked if the Email has been sent.

    Kind regards
