"file" scheme in "ms-word" scheme

I am using the following scheme in the URI (this is just an example)

ms-word:file://C:/test.docx

in order to open a file stored locally or in a SMB/SAMBA share. I have the Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 (Word 2016 Build 14131.20320 Click-to-Run).
This URI actually opens Word which in turn recognizes the "file" scheme and accesses the file.

The same thing does NOT work with another Mircrosoft Office Professional Plus 2016 installation: Word 2016 (16.0.5188.100) MSO (16.0.5188.1000) 32-Bit. Here Word opens but it does not recognize the command when the "file" scheme is used (it recognizes only "http" and "https" schemes).

Is the "file" scheme recognized only in some Office versions?
