Error: "Microsoft OneNote has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem".

Hi all, I have an odd issue with OneNote 2016.

I have it installed on multiple devices, including iPhone, Android Phone, Laptop and PCs - all are fine except for on one of the PCs.

I can open OneNote absolutely fine, however as soon as I click into a tab (any tab), or try typing into the default tab OneNote crashes with the following error:

"Microsoft OneNote has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem".

OneNote then closes. When I open it again, I have multiple options, including deleting cache, deleting settings or opening normally. Whatever I choose I get the same issue as above. OneNote opens fine, but as soon as I select a tab - or try typing in the default tab, the program crashes again.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling OneNote. I’ve tried both the repair and online repair options. I've tried uninstalling OneNote and Office and reinstalling both. I've tried deleting all tabs and their contents from another device and starting again, I've tried deleting settings, I've tried deleting the cache and still I get the exact same error, it's driving me crazy!

As I said, I only have this issue on one device, my phones, laptop and a different PC work like a dream - does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be the cause of the issue?

Here is the information that shows in my Application Log – I get this error even when I clean boot my PC:

Well, last thing to try is to reinstall your PC but that is kinda boring.

If you do not want to do that consider using the OneNote Windows 10 App from the store.

    you have windows 10 right?

    Hi,

As suggested in the above response, you may save an OneNote Notebook locally on the computer for test and see how it works.

If the issue still persist, you may refer to the suggestions from the link below to repair Office installation and verify the results.

Hi Prabhavathi - thanks for the response!

I have ensured that all Office and Windows updates have been downloaded and installed. In regards to the file itself, it is indeed stored on OneDrive, but this works fine on other machines so I'm not sure that it being on OneDrive is the cause of the issue. I've also tested with new notebooks, and got the same issue.

Do you have any other suggestions? I'm happy to download the files locally if you believe this may resolve the issue, would this stop be from being able to access the files on my other devices?

    Many Thanks

    Hi,

I realize the inconvenience you are experiencing with OneNote. I will certainly help you.

A quick question before we proceed.

What is the location of the file? Is it stored on OneDrive?

If yes, you may save the file locally on the computer and see how it works.

Meanwhile, ensure you have installed all Office Updates as well as Windows updates, restart the computer and check if it helps.

Hope it helps. Try the suggestion and let us know the result at your earliest convenience.
