There is no update done.
When you update an MX record, it will route emails to the correct mailbox on Office 365, this depends if you are using only one MX record on your organization. If you are using multiple MX records, try to change the preference of the mail routing MX record
to a higher priority setting. You can refer to this article.
After verifying your DNS records, check the list and enter the correct MX record that was suggested.
Here is an example:
Domain: contoso.com
MX record: contoso-com.mail.protection.outlook.com

1. Are you using Custom domain, or Office 365 manages the domain (onmicrosoft)?
