Hi,

If I am creating a new site collection using any OOB template in my new SP 2016 not SharePoint online. The default versioning is set to 500 for the document libraries, which is very high, as it will take lots of space.

How to change this to some smaller number ?

    Hi Vishal,

You can limit the number of versions and drafts that be retained in a list or library in SharePoint Server 2016. For your reference: Enable and configure versioning for a list or library.

Here is another article you can refer to: Set\Update Version Count In SharePoint Document Library & Remove Older Versions.
