Hide foreign language fonts?

I really enjoy Microsoft Word 2016 for Mac, but now it has saddled my font list with a bunch of japanese and other language fonts that I never use. They crowd my font menu. How can I hide them? There do not seem to be any advanced language settings for Word on Mac compared to Windows. These features existed in a previous version. Here is a picture of what I'm talking about.

There are at least 2 options which very well will satisfy the need as you have described it:

  • Good: In the Apple Font Book.app create a new Collection. Name it something meaningful & add to it only the fonts you routinely use. The available Font Collections appear at the top of the list as shown in this screen shot:

  • Best: In Word, create either Character or Paragraph Styles which incorporate the preferred font. Use of Styles rather than direct formatting is a substantially more effective way to format documents. If you aren't familiar with the use of Styles you should find all the information you need in Word Help.

It should be noted that prior to Office 2016 for Mac, Microsoft installed the relevant fonts in the regular apple font folders. But these apps all store their own individual font libraries inside the package contents of the individual apps. So its actually not a problem with the system settings. its a way that Office 2016 for Mac was designed - to prevent Apple's Font Book from managing the applications' fonts apparently. I do not approve.

Well, there USED to be a pretty good workaround for this. :(

In Word 2011, I just created custom buttons for the 3-4 fonts I use most often, which could be dragged into menus, placed on custom toolbars, or in the QAT. Here's the relevant window in Word 2011:

As far as I can tell, this kind of UI customization is not available in Word 2016 for Mac, but it would be one more reason to hope that the Word/Mac development team will finally get to work on enabling even the most basic custom UI features that have long been present in previous versions of Word for Mac.

I would literally be willing to bribe someone at Microsoft handsomely to get things moving on the UI customization front.

Believe it or not, it is tricky to remove Foreign Language fonts as many System settings actually use certain foreign language characters in system Operation. I am afraid you'll have to just live with them  Control of Fonts Shown is a System Responsibility and not part of the application responsibility.
