Mail merge margin issue

I am using Windows 10 with Office 2010 on a laptop.

I am providing a file for a book publisher to print letters to be physically mailed to a list, using Word with an Excel file as the data source. All was well until the author told me that the publisher had just informed her that the letter must be only one page rather than two. It wasn't until trying to cut the letter down to size that I noticed that as soon as I went in to the mail merge function, Word took the margins from the standard one inch to an inch and a quarter. When I try to choose either "Normal" margins or go to custom margins and set them back to one inch, I get this message:

"Settings you chose for the left and right margins, column spacing, or paragraph indents are too large for the page width in some sections."

Why is it doing this, and how can I get that inch back?

Thanks!

It's hard to say without seeing the original document.  If you still have it, if you send me a copy, referencing this thread in the covering email message, I will investigate the issue.

I started the whole process over and managed to get my margins to stay at normal, but I would still like to know where I went wrong the first time.

    Thanks!
