When I use Insert -> Object, I get the following menu:

I want to insert a PDF into a cell in my excel sheet, but in this menu I can't create an Adobe document for importing the PDF. How can I get the create file tab?

You can't. Implementation of OLE is decidedly less functional in the Mac Office programs. The only supported object types are those you wee listed. An existing PDF can be inserted [Insert> Pictures> Picture from File] which will display its first page as a Picture, but a new PDF object can't be created.

FWIW, yours is a slightly different view than I get on Excel2016(desktop)/Win7. Here is what I see (below). I suspect you want to click the "from file" at the bottom of your box, then select the PDF. When you select a file, and display as icon, the result is shown as the second image below.

I forgot to mention I'm working with Excel for Mac 2016... Perhaps that's why the menu is different?

If I try using the "From File" button and put in the PDF, it tells me "Cannot insert object" presumable because my only options for import objects are word documents...

    Any suggestions?

I'm not a Mac user, so I don't have any insight into how that affects MSOffice and OLE. Hopefully someone with Mac experience will chime in. Sorry!
