mail attribute alias automatically deleted within 24 hours

When we create a user in AD (Test Test1) it’s user name is test1 but it’s mail attribute is ******@primarydomain.com

After a azure active directory sync it will create the user in office 365. The user will be named test1@primarydomain.com

We can then license the user, after another sync, it will create the alias ******@primarydomain.com and test.test1@.

Everything is correct. If I look at the same user the following day the ******@primarydomain.com alias is removed although the other aliases are there. Our current work around is to add the ******@primarydomain.com address to the proxy attribute but we’ve never had to do that before and I don’t understand why it is getting deleted.

I can complete several delta and full syncs and the alias will still be there. This leads me to believe that it is not AADS that is removing the aliases. I feel like this has to be a issue with a process that runs on 365 at night.

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for the information in Private Message. I understand this issue is affecting all your cloud accounts. Have you checked the Azure AD connect client Export Statistics History Deletes or Updates logs when the email aliases are removed?

Unfortunately, I cannot enlarge and view the screenshots clearly. Could you provide the screenshots separately? Also, please provide a screenshot of the PowerShell outputs after getting the mailbox details using Get-Mailbox -Identity user@contoso | FL command after providing the requested screenshots.

Thanks for your time and patience.

    Alex

    Hi Mike,

We have not received reports from other customers about the issue. To better understand the issue, I would like to collect some more details.

1.Where do you find the user's alias is missing, in Exchange Admin Center or Office 365 Admin Center?

2.Can you get the user alias in Exchange Online PowerShell?

3.Does the issue affect any other users in your organization?

4.Can you create a new user to reproduce this issue? The screenshots you provide are not clear. If you can reproduce it, please provide the screenshots by the Insert Image button.

Delta sync comes only when there is a change on the objects. Please check if there is any change during the process. Moreover, if you can produce the issue, please go to Azure AD connect Synchronization Service Manage to check if there was any Deletes logs recorded in the Export Statistics History when the synchronization occurred.

To protect your privacy, I have sent you aPrivate Message. You can provide the screenshots in it.

    Regards,

    Alex
