Concatenate function in Excel

Windows 7 Professional SP1

Excel 2010 14.0.6129.5000 (64-bit)

Contents of text-format Cell D2:   4246040006683090040716

Contents of text-format Cell E2:   4431066097083309889939

Contents of Cell C2:   =CONCATENATE(D2,E2)

The concatenate function will not show me the concatenated values, only the formula.  If I choose Evaluate Formula on the formulas  tab, I get the message:  "The cell currently being evaluated contains a constant."

What is wrong; why won't Excel concatenate the cell contents?  Any help would be appreciated.

Jane

Your formula was typed into a cell that had previously been formatted as text.

Delete the formula, format the cell as General

Now re-enter the formula (or its shorter equivalent =D2&E2)

and all should be  well

best wishes

Hi,

Check the format of C2, guessing it is TEXT, change it to general, click in the formula and enter.

Thank you both, JP & Bernard.  You were right and my problem is solved.
