Reappearing Image Background when Saving Document

My question is relevant to Word 2010.

In my document I have a number of images.  In one part, I have one image over another.  The top image (silhouette of the US) is on top of a gray square.  The original image of the US was entirely white, with the US outlined in black.  I removed the background, leaving the white US and black outline.

Every time I hit save, the image reverts back to having the background, leaving a white image with the outline US, on top of the gray square.

Why is it doing this and how can I save my document as I have it with the edited image.
